Instructional Course
Suturing Corneal Lacerations and Corneal Grafts
Course Instructors:
Harminder Dua, UK,
Dalia Said, UK
Corneal suturing is a basic skill that all eye surgeons must have, especially those dealing with emergency situations involving patients inflicted with ocular trauma. As the cornea is a relatively rigid structure and avascular, precise suturing is important, compared to for example the skin. The objective of suturing corneal lacerations is to obtain precise alignment and apposition to minimize distortion (astigmatism) and prevent leak from the anterior chamber.
The course will cover aspects of needles and suture material. Principles and techniques of suturing partial thickness and full thickness lacerations, the latter of linear, triangular and stellate configurations; post operative management and techniques of suture removal.
For aspiring and established cornea surgeons, the skill of suturing corneal grafts, both penetrating and anterior lamellar, is an art and a science. The course will cover the basics of corneal graft suturing, tying knots, burying knots and when the time comes, suture removal. Complications of sutures and dealing with them will also be taught.
